What To Do If Your Dishwasher Is Not Draining

Is your dishwasher not draining completely? Although you first thought might be that the dishwasher needs to be repaired or replaced, the problem could actually be with the plumbing and not the machine. If the water from the dishwasher encounters a blockage on its way to the drain pipe, it will have nowhere to go but back into the dishwasher. So, if your dishwasher is not draining, rule out a stoppage by following these steps.
  1. Make sure the sink is draining. If your sink is not draining well the dishwasher will not drain either.

  2. Run the garbage disposer. In most cases the dishwasher is set up to drain through the garbage disposer. When there is food built up on the inside of the disposer there is less space for the dishwasher water to go. Run the disposer thoroughly with plenty of water to really clear out the debris inside of it.

  3. Clean the air gap. If water comes out of the air gap (and sometimes all over the counter) when you run the dishwasher, the blockage is between the air gap and the garbage disposer. To clear it, remove the air gap cap, locate the large tube that goes into the garbage disposer and remove it. Clear out any build up in the tube.

  4. Check the connection between the drain tube and garbage disposer. While the air gap tube is out you can check to see if the blockage is at the opening to the garbage disposer. Insert a screw driver into the small opening for the drain tube and move it around to make sure it is clear.

  5. Clear the drain tube. Disconnect the drain tube from the air gap and make sure it is not plugged. If there is any debris inside the tube, clear it out before reconnecting it.

If you have tried all of these fixes and the dishwasher is still not draining it could be that the pump is bad. If this is the case you can contact an appliance repair person to inspect it.

1. Remove the shower valve handle.
2. Unscrew the cover plates from the shower valve.
3. While standing in the shower, drill ¼-inch holes through the wall behind the shower valve.
4. Cut open the wall behind the shower valve using a drywall saw.
5. Cut a 1x4 to fit behind the water pipes.
6. Screw the 1x4 to the studs on either side of the shower valve.
7. Secure the water pipes to the 1x4 blocking with copper clips.
8. Cover the hole cut in the back wall with a plastic access panel.
9. Apply silicone caulk to the backside of the wall plate, and screw it in place.
10. Place a bead of plumber's putty around the valve cover and reattach it.
11. Replace shower valve handle and remove excess putty from around the valve cover.

How to Unclog a Drain

  1. Kitchen Sink: Make sure to have standing water on both sides of the sink. Place the stopper or towel on one side and plunge the other. It may be helpful to have someone help by holding the stopper in place since the plunging action may pop it out. If this doesn’t clear it try switching sides. If plunging does not clear the stoppage you could try clearing the drain by taking the trap apart or by using a snake.

  2. Bathroom Sink: Cover the air holes in the sink with a rag or some duct tape before you plunge. As with the kitchen sink, if plunging does not clear the bathroom sink you could try clearing the drain by taking the trap apart or by using a snake.

  3. Bathtub: Tubs can be a bit trickier because you have to block off that overflow before you give it a good plunging. Otherwise all the water and force generated by the plunging action will come out the overflow. I recommend taking the overflow cover plate off and plugging the hole with a large rag (be sure it isn’t in too far so you can take it back out). Once this is secure you can plunge the drain. For a stubborn clog you could also try using a snake to clear the tub drain.

  4. Showers: No air holes or overflow to cover; just put the plunger over the drain and plunge.
  5. Toilet: A plunger works here most of the time and I believe you should have one handy for those emergencies. Some good back and forth plunging action can save you a service call from your plumber. When plunging doesn't clear the clog you could try using a toilet auger.
