NUMBER ONE! Wear proper attire and gloves. As I’ve stated before. Cabling gloves are specially made to not bind up in the spinning cable. Do not use cloth gloves for this reason. Since loose clothing is just aching to get wrapped up, also, it is also banned when snaking drains in San Diego. Also, wearing a back brace and goggles are not bad ideas at all, friend. Keep it safe.
NUMBER TWO! Keep the machine as close to the opening as possible. Having long lengths of cable between the machine and the sewer opening writhing like a cobra is a fool’s game. Short lengths are easier to control, especially when the cable head- the cutter blade- gets bound up in some nasty roots.
Speaking of which is NUMBER THREE! If the cutter head gets tied up, then you have take it very easy. We’re talking simple physics here, my amigos. When the cable is spinning and the head stays still, there is a LOT OF tension built up. It gets all torqued up. The cable wants to release this tension. You cause too much tension and the shit is gonna hit the fan, right? The snake can snap and injure you, it can come screaming back out of the sewer pipe (and injure you), it can twist around your delicate fingers (again, injuring you). Get the point? If the cable starts binding up, let off the Gas, pull it back a bit and try again.
This leads us to NUMBER FOUR! Is the cable stuck? UH-OH! But, it’s not the end of the world. Some machines have Spin Right and Spin Left options. This can help free up a cable head that is stuck. But, for the ones that have Forward and Reverse, don’t use Reverse. It’s dangerous. There is a good chance of using Reverse for too long and having the cable come flying out of the opening and right at you (sound familiar?). You are going to have to pull it manually. If that doesn’t work, then your only option is to cut the pipe and do a repair.
And NUMBER FIVE! Don’t force the cable into the opening. Not all drain and sewer pipes are going to magically open up for you. You don’t have any clue what’s going on down there. Maybe roots have completely taken over or the drain line is collapsed. If the snake has to fight too hard, then the sewer pipe is crying out for help and most probably have to be fixed. Problem:Garbage disposal hums but won't operate properly. Solution:Press the reset button located on the bottom of the disposal. If this doesn't work, turn off the power switch un-plug the power cord and shine a light into the drain. Look for a foreign object such as a coin, plastic bread tie or staple. Remove the item with pliers or a grasping tool. It is dangerous to put your hand inside a disposal. Your disposal may have a hex key jam clearing tool. Look for it under the sink or taped to the disposal. Check for a slot at the bottom of the disposal where the tool can be inserted and turned back and forth to clear the jam.
